Tuesday tips: how to build a new habit - part 1

Trying to (re)build a practice/some kind of music-related habit? Start small! (okay maybe not small instrument, but you get it)

My first tip for beginning a practice habit either in a student, or even if you’re trying to rebuild a routine, is start small.

(for real though, this is my beginning stages go-to for any habit building, it doesn’t really get practice-specific until my third)

Give yourself just a little bit to do each day - it builds up, and this way you’re not facing as much pressure of getting the big thing done. I don’t know about you but from my experience, it can be intimidating to start doing a new task or trying to form a new habit and you give yourself the full thing the first little bit through.

Things to try:

A mini-warm up
A short, melody
A short improvisation on anything (on your favourite scale, on a specific rhythm, responding to the sounds you hear from outside, etc)

Just something to get air or vibrations back into your instrument, and feel good about it. Every little bite-sized beginning counts!
