Pre-practice prompts (and things to try)

Some pre-practice prompts and some things to try for today.

>What is your motivation for practicing today?

I like this one because sometimes there can be differences in the way practice is approached when it’s a perceived external motivation versus internal motivation. What are those differences if there are any?

>Do you have a big-picture goal to what you’re working on?

Some of us are preparing for concerts, some are practicing for maintenance, some of us are practicing for sheer enjoyment. This isn’t about today’s practice, this one is big-picture kind of thing - and it’s okay if you don’t feel you have a big-picture goal - not everything is about goals.

>If you have a big-picture goal, what will it be like when you realize it?

Be as detailed as you can.

>If you don’t, what would you like to accomplish today? How do you think that will be like when it’s realized?

This can be a specific goal like “smooth out technique in measures 33-44” or something like “find enjoyment in music” or “try playing with wreckless abandon”. And again, be as detailed as you can about how you imagine the result feeling like.

>Can you take a snapshot of that feeling and insert it/feel it/embody it into your practice today?

If we can actively feel the good feels while we’re practicing we’ll be practicing them into our playing and be easier to associate and recall them later.

If any of this helps or sparks your interest and you’re going to try it, I’d love to hear about it.
